We've negotiated many Stripe offers in 2022. Don't leave $100K+ on the table.
Not really. Stripe claims to have a no negotiation policy. This is false - we have had a 100% success rate negotiating with Stripe in 2022. That said, it's an uphill battle, and you need to be prepared to handle a lot of pushback.
Stripe has started offering single-year vesting schedules. This means that the dollar amount won't vary every year, but the number of shares you receive will change depending on whether the stock price rises or falls. They've severely limited your upside (at a pre-IPO company). This change is not good for employees.
Stripe's compensation is location dependent. Stripe was offering $20k to employees who moved to a permanent remote role during Covid-19, this also involved taking a 10% pay cut in base salary. We regularly see a reduction in overall compensation across base salary and equity when a fully remote role is offered.
Stripe offers a competitive relocation package. This does vary based on a number of factors, but we've seen candidates get $20K for domestic moves.
Again, Stripe claims to have a no negotiation policy. At Rora, we have successfully negotiated all comp components, but it's clear that signing bonus is the most negotiable component at Stripe. Since Stripe has very competitive compensation packages from the get-go, the ranges for signing bonuses are not as large as their competitors. For example, the upper limit for the signing bonus of an L3b Senior Software Engineer is $60k, while an E5 engineer at Facebook can secure a signing bonus of up to $100k.
Stripe recruiters are more likely to push back on negotiating vs. asking for competing offers in writing. In our experience they only ask for a breakdown of your competing opportunities once you convince them to negotiate.
Stripe only goes above band for candidates on extremely rare occasion, in part due to their very competitive compensation packages. You'll have a greater chance of getting upleveled to keep up with strong competitive cross offers.
Stripe has a centralized compensation team, and as a result, the hiring manager does not have much influence over your compensation. For very senior candidates this changes.
